Federal OSHA Regulations & Standards

OSHA has extensive regulations and standards regarding asbestos awareness and exposure. Because there are many different industries in which asbestos exposure might be a problem, OSHA breaks up asbestos-related regulations as follows:

  • 1910.1001 - General industry: These regulations cover all industries not included in agriculture, construction, or maritime. General industries are regulated by OSHA general industry standards, directives, and standard interpretations.
  • 1926.1101 - Construction industry: These regulations cover the construction industry, which is a high hazard industry that comprises a wide range of activities involving construction, alteration, or repair.
  • 1915.1001 - Shipyard industry: These regulations cover the shipyard industry, which traditionally has an injury-accident rate of more than twice that of construction and general industry. The shipyard industry is a subset of the maritime industry, but it is the only area of the maritime industry where asbestos exposure is regulated.
