Hazard Awareness

Hazard awareness is an important part of the health and safety of any workplace. Employers are responsible for anticipating potential workplace hazards. These hazards can be inherent, such as the hazards involved when working in a confined space; or they can be created by the work tasks, such as hazards that result from removing ACM. When employers anticipate these hazards, they can implement effective controls and provide proper training.

Employers can anticipate hazards by knowing the history of the work involved, surveying workplace conditions, and providing hazard education. Some of the hazardous environments that could potentially present ACM include the following:

  • Removing old insulation that may contain asbestos
  • Demolition of old buildings and structures
  • Cleanup after a flood or other natural disaster
