Hazard Monitoring
Environmental and personal air monitoring is one way to determine exposure to asbestos. Air monitoring instruments can measure asbestos concentrations in the air. Air monitoring measures what you are exposed to on the job. It can be done from a fixed location or from personal monitors that are attached to individual workers.
In areas where Class I and Class II asbestos work is conducted, daily air monitoring is required. For Class III and IV work, the employer must conduct more periodic air monitoring in all areas where exposure might exceed the PEL. The sampling intervals must be done regularly enough to accurately depict employee exposure. Periodic monitoring may be discontinued if results thus far have shown that asbestos exposure is continuously below PELs.
