Health Hazard Classes
The asbestos-related health hazard classes outlined by the GHS are defined as follows:
Specific target organ toxicity (STOT) refers to a substance that impairs the function of a body organ.
Carcinogen refers to any hazardous substance that can induce cancer or increase its incidence.
Because asbestos does not have any immediately noticeable health effects, it can be extremely difficult for someone to know whether he or she has been exposed. Asbestos is classified as a carcinogen because exposure can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer. In addition, asbestosis, which is also related to prolonged asbestos exposure, specifically targets the lungs, making asbestos fall under the classification of specific target organ toxicity.
