PPE

When both engineering controls and administrative controls fail to provide sufficient protection against hazards, the use of protective clothing or equipment is a supplementary method of control.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards. Using PPE requires training. It is important to note that PPE does not completely eliminate the hazard. If the equipment fails or is improperly fitted or used, exposure to the hazard will occur.

The purpose of protective clothing and equipment is to shield or isolate individuals from asbestos exposure, not to eliminate the hazard. During some operations, it is not always apparent when exposure occurs. Some hazards are invisible and offer no warning.

Examples of PPE used to protect against asbestos exposure include items such as gloves, safety glasses, splash goggles, face shields, boots, full body suits, and respirators.

Employers must provide and pay for all PPE. In addition, employer responsibilities regarding PPE include the following:

  • Provide PPE for all employees exposed to asbestos above the time-weighted average or excursion limit.
  • Ensure that all PPE is cleaned after use.
  • Ensure that contaminated clothing is transported only in sealed impermeable bags.
  • Periodically review, update, and evaluate the effectiveness of the PPE.
  • Ensure that all PPE is in proper working condition at all times.

Employees also have responsibilities regarding PPE, as follows:

  • Properly wear PPE.
  • Attend training sessions on PPE.
  • Care for, clean, and maintain PPE.
  • Inform a supervisor of the need to repair or replace PPE.
