Respiratory Protection Program

Whenever respirators are used, whether on a voluntary basis, as part of a company policy, or required by an overexposure, the employer must implement a respiratory protection program. The respiratory protection program must provide written procedures detailing when respirators are necessary as well as information on the selection, maintenance, training, fitting, supervision, cleaning, and use of all respiratory protection devices.

Respirator training should, at a minimum, include:

  • Why the respirator is necessary and how improper fit, use, or maintenance can compromise its protective effect
  • Limitations and capabilities of the respirator
  • Effective use of the respirator in emergency situations
  • How to inspect the respirator, put on and remove the respirator, and use and check the seals
  • Maintenance and storage
  • Recognition of medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of a respirator
