Respiratory Protection
A respirator is a protective facepiece, hood, or helmet that is designed to protect the wearer against a variety of harmful airborne agents. Asbestos exposure requires specific respiratory protection, depending on the concentration of asbestos in the air, as follows:
- Asbestos concentrations less than or equal to 1 f/cm3 require a half-mask, air-purifying respirator other than a disposable respirator. The respirator must be equipped with high-efficiency filters.
- Asbestos concentrations less than or equal to 5 f/cm3 require a full-facepiece, air-purifying respirator equipped with high-efficiency filters.
- Asbestos concentrations less than or equal to 10 f/cm3 require any powered air-purifying respirator equipped with high-efficiency filters, or any supplied air respirator operated in continuous-flow mode.
- Asbestos concentrations less than or equal to 100 f/cm3 require a full-facepiece, supplied air respirator operated in pressure-demand mode.
- Asbestos concentrations greater than 1,000 f/cm3 require a full-facepiece, supplied air respirator operated in pressure-demand mode and equipped with an auxiliary, positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.
