What Happened to Asbestos?
As people realized the dangers and harmful effects of asbestos, they were forced to find alternatives to it. Throughout the twentieth century, asbestos was now present in the insulation of homes and commercial buildings. Today, asbestos has been largely replaced by polyurethane foams, flour fillers, cellulose fiber, thermoset plastic flour, and amorphous silica fabrics. These alternative materials are considered to be safe for both humans and the environment. Polyurethane foams are especially useful, as they can be used in any type of structure, and they do not emit harmful gases.
