Applicable Regulations
Following the passage of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act in 2000, OSHA updated its regulations to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. These updates were based on the findings of several studies, and the activist work of several nurses who had been exposed to bloodborne pathogens while on the job.
California has implemented its own OSHA-approved state regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens: California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5193, also known as 8 CCR 5193 for short. This course will focus on the Cal/OSHA regulations rather than the federal regulations.
