Recommendations

There are many options for devices with safety features, but many of these devices are useful only in particular situations. In general, the CDC recommends that safety devices should have the following characteristics:

  • The device should be needleless.
  • The safety feature should be an integral part of the device.
  • The safety feature should work passively, requiring no activation.
  • If the safety feature must require activation, activation should be possible using a one-handed technique, keeping both hands behind the exposed sharp.
  • The user should be able to easily tell whether the safety feature is activated.
  • The safety feature should not be able to be deactivated, remaining safe through disposal.
  • The device should perform reliably.
  • The device should be easy and practical to use.
  • The device should be safe and effective for patient care.

Situations can differ, and not all of the foregoing features may be possible for each application. For example, a safety feature that requires user activation might be preferable in certain cases. The foregoing recommendations are meant to be general guidelines, and each device must be evaluated based on its own merit for the particular use.
