Training Requirements

In addition to the training required for anyone who may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, workers and research laboratories and production facilities have special training requirements.

Before being allowed to work with HIV, HBV, or HCV, employees must show proficiency in standard microbial practices, as well as the techniques used in the facility in which they work. Employees must also have prior experience with handling human pathogens before working with HIV, HBV, or HCV. For those who have no prior experience, employers must provide a training program. Until employees have finished this program, their work activities should not include the handling of infectious agents. Workers should be given more dangerous responsibilities only as they learn and develop proficiency.
