Delayed Effects
Victims with excessive exposure to benzene should be followed for up to 72 hours to monitor for the development of delayed effects, including the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Long-term adverse health effects caused by exposure to moderate to high levels of benzene may include trouble walking, excessive nervousness and irritability, and shortness of breath. These adverse health effects may last up to two weeks. Additional adverse health effects may include abnormal heart rhythms and yellow coloration of the skin, which may persist for up to four weeks.
Benzene poisoning can cause rapid death. However, deaths have occurred as late as several days after the poisoning due to permanent brain damage, cardiac arrest, or respiratory arrest.
