Hazards
Part of benzene's danger comes from its extreme flammability. Benzene is easily ignited by heat, sparks, or flames. Containers with benzene may explode when heated, and fires caused by benzene produce irritating, corrosive, and toxic gases. Benzene also reacts violently with oxidants and halogens, causing an explosion hazard. Benzene vapors can interact with air to form explosive mixtures.
In addition, benzene vapors are heavier than air. They spread along the ground and collect and stay in poorly ventilated, low-lying, or confined areas, such as sewers, basements, and tanks. Benzene poses a vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors, or in sewers.
