Spill & Leak Procedures
If a material that contains benzene is spilled or leaked, workers should immediately remove all ignition sources should be removed and ventilate all enclosed spaces. Suitable materials, such as paper towels for small quantities of liquid, and dry sand or earth for larger quantities, should be used to absorb as much benzene as possible. Materials used for absorption should then be placed in a secure container.
What remains of a benzene spill or leak must be flushed with large amounts of water. Because of its explosive properties, benzene should never be flushed into a confined space, such as a sewer.
