Warning Signs & Labels

Employers are required to post signs at entrances to regulated areas that include benzene hazards. Starting on June 1, 2016, employers may include the following legend on the warning signs or label:

  • DANGER
  • BENZENE
  • MAY CAUSE CANCER
  • HIGHLY FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR
  • DO NOT SMOKE
  • WEAR RESPIRATORY PROTECTION IN THIS AREA
  • AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Up until June 1, 2016, employers may use the following legend on the warning sign or label:

  • DANGER
  • BENZENE
  • CANCER HAZARD
  • EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE - NO SMOKING
  • AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
  • RESPIRATOR REQUIRED

Employers are required to ensure that all containers of benzene in the workplace include labels or other appropriate warning signs. Cal/OSHA does not require pipes to be labeled.
