Initial Monitoring

Employers must monitor the amount of cotton dust in the air if their workplace includes any of the following jobs:

  • Yarn manufacturing
  • Slashing and weaving
  • Work in waste houses for textile operations
  • Preparing cotton for washing

This monitoring must represent the exposure of all employees over an eight-hour shift during normal operations, and must be done for each work area. Monitoring is a very technical and complicated process. As such, employers may have a qualified industrial hygienist perform the dust sampling. The specific procedures required for sampling are given in 8 CCR 5190, Appendix A.
