Medical Surveillance & Removal
The previous sections dealt with ways to minimize or avoid lead exposure, most of which are mandated by the Cal/OSHA lead standard, CCR 8 1532.1. This standard also requires a medical plan, which serves two purposes: to make sure the other provisions of the standard are working, and to help detect and fix health problems if the safety precautions fail. Medical surveillance must be conducted or supervised by a licensed physician. Employees are not required to participate in medical tests or procedures, but these tests and procedures can potentially save a worker's life and protect the worker's health. Workers are strongly encouraged to participate in the tests and procedures. This section discusses the two medical provisions of the Cal/OSHA lead standard: medical surveillance and medical removal.
