Communication of Hazards
The hazards of exposure to cadmium should be communicated to every employee. The hazards should be posted on safety data sheets or on warning labels that all employees have access to. Labels should also be posted on any shipping or storage container that might contain items that include cadmium, such as:
- Cadmium compounds
- Cadmium contaminated clothing or equipment
- Cadmium-containing waste, scrap, or debris
Warning labels on these containers must include the following text:
DANGER
CONTAINS CADMIUM
MAY CAUSE CANCER
CAUSES DAMAGE TO LUNGS AND KIDNEYS
AVOID CREATING DUST
At any and all approaches to a location designated as a "regulated area" - that is, the area limited to authorized personnel due to the expectation of cadmium exposure above the PEL - there should be warning signs that contain the following text:
DANGER
CADMIUM
MAY CAUSE CANCER
CAUSES DAMAGE TO LUNGS AND KIDNEYS
WEAR RESPIRATORY PROTECTION IN THIS AREA
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
It is very important that these signs are always well maintained and easily read.
