Mechanical Ventilation

Mechanical ventilation is often used as an engineering control for cadmium exposure. When air is recirculated in the workplace, an approved high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter should be used. A HEPA filter is designed to capture more than 99 percent of the circulated particles. HEPA filters should be maintained and monitored frequently to ensure their effectiveness. Any time a process in the work environment is changed, the ventilation system must be reevaluated.

Some respirators also include HEPA filtration, which can reduce cadmium exposure but not entirely eliminate it.
