• Engineering controls are ways of preventing rather than simply mitigating exposure. These controls are often the best way to keep employees safe.
• Administrative controls, such as limiting the amount of time a worker is potentially exposed to cadmium, also reduce risks of overexposure.

Substitution is sometimes the preferred method. For example, if cadmium can be replaced with another alternative, (for example, in the battery industry), exposure to this toxic element is eliminated.
