Warning Labels for Cadmium

Warning labels must be displayed on any container that might contain cadmium, such as shipping or storage containers, airtight bags for transporting personal protective equipment, or debris. Labels warning of cadmium hazards must include the following components:

Product identifiers: Names or numbers used on a hazardous product label or in a safety data sheet. They provide a unique means by which the product user can identify the chemical substance or mixture.

Pictograms: Symbols that convey health, physical, and environmental hazard information. The symbol appears inside a diamond with a red border.

Signal word: One word used to indicate the relative severity of the hazard and alert the individual to a potential hazard on the label and safety data sheet. The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) includes two signal words: "Danger" for more severe hazards, and "Warning" for less severe hazards.

Hazard statements: A phrase assigned to each hazard category that describes the nature of the hazard. An example of a hazard statement is "Harmful if swallowed."

Precautionary statements: Phrases that describe recommended measures that should be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from the exposure to a hazardous product, or the improper storage or handling of a hazardous product. These phrases cover prevention, response, storage, and disposal of products. An example of a precautionary statement is "Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using this product."

Supplier identification: Includes the name, address, and telephone number of the manufacturer or supplier of the substance.
