Applicable Requlations - General Industry Safety Order 3650

General Industry Safety Order 3650 outlines guidelines for the safe use of industrial tractors. It requires that all employees operating agricultural or industrial tractors be educated in specific procedures, such as:

  • Employee operating instructions
  • Maintenance
  • Driving rules

Employee Operating Instructions

Employees are responsible for adhering to the following operating instructions:

  • Wearing a seatbelt in a tractor with ROPS
  • Avoiding operating tractor near ditches or muddy, slick surfaces
  • Staying off steep slopes
  • Paying attention to where one is driving
  • Not allowing others to ride
  • Operating the equipment smoothly
  • Hitching only to the drawbar and points recommended by the manufacturer
  • Setting brakes securely and using a park lock when the equipment is stopped

Maintenance

Employees are responsible for checking tractors prior to operation each day and reporting unsafe situations to a foreman or mechanic. The tractor cannot be operated until the unsafe situation is remedied. Repairs cannot be performed until the equipment is secured in a way that will not cause sudden movement or cause injury to a repairman.

Driving Rules

Employees are prohibited from stunt driving or horseplay while operating an agricultural or industrial tractor. Vehicles must maintain a safe speed and safe distance from other vehicles.
