Applicable Processes & Industries
The Cal/OSHA process safety management standard applies to any process that meets one of the following criteria:
- Involves a chemical at or above the specified threshold quantities listed in Appendix A
- Involves a Category 1 flammable gas (as defined in 8 CCR 5194) or a flammable liquid with a flashpoint below 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) on site in one location and in a quantity of 10,000 pounds (4535.9 kilograms) or more
Although the Cal/OSHA process safety standard mainly applies to manufacturing industries that deal with chemicals, transportation equipment, and fabricated metal products, it also affects the following sectors:
- Natural gas liquids
- Farm product warehousing
- Electric, gas, and sanitary services
- Wholesale trade
- Pyrotechnics and explosives manufacturers
The standard also has special provisions for contractors working in covered facilities.
