Injury & Illness Prevention Plan

In California, every employer is required by law to provide a safe workplace for employees. Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations requires every California employer to have a written Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP). This plan must be in accord with 8 CCR Section 3203 of the General Industry Safety Orders.

The employer's IIPP must include the following elements:

  • A statement of management's commitment to safety
  • A listing of responsibilities
  • A safety communications system for informing employees of safety issues
  • A system for ensuring employee compliance with safe work practices
  • Scheduled inspections and an evaluation system
  • Procedures for investigating accidents
  • Procedures for correcting unsafe and unhealthy conditions
  • Safety and health training and instruction
  • Recordkeeping and documentation

The safety communications system must ensure that all safety information communicated to employees is readily understood by the affected employees. In addition, the safety communications system must include provisions designed to encourage employees to inform the employer of hazards at the worksite without fear of reprisal.
