Staffing
The selection of audit team members is critical to the success of the audit program. Employers should choose team members based on their experience, knowledge, and training. In addition, the team members should be familiar with the processes being evaluated, as well as the auditing techniques, practices, and procedures. The size of the team will vary depending on the size and complexity of the process that is being audited. For example, for a large, complex, highly instrumented plant, it may be desirable to have team members with expertise in the following areas:
- Process engineering and design
- Process chemistry
- Instrumentation and computer controls
- Electrical hazards and classifications
- Safety and health disciplines; maintenance
- Emergency preparedness
- Warehousing or shipping
- Process safety auditing
The team may use part-time members to provide the required expertise.
