Animal Healthcare & Related Facilities That Are Subject to the ATD Standards
The second part of the ATD standard (Title 8 CCR Section 5199) applies specifically to operations in which workers may come in contact with zoonotic transmissible disease pathogens. This part of the ATD regulations is referred to as the ATD-Zoonotic standards. The organizations subject to ATD-Zoonotic standards include the following:
- Operations that manage, capture, sample, transport, or dispose of wild birds or other wildlife
- Farms that produce animals or animal products
- Operations that transport animals, untreated animal products, animal byproducts, or animal wastes to and from farms
- Slaughterhouses and facilities that initially process untreated animal products, byproducts, or wastes
- Operations that perform veterinary services, animal inspection, and other animal healthcare services
- Importers of live animals and untreated animal products
- Operations in which animals are displayed, transported, or housed, such as zoos, animal parks, and pet stores
- Laboratory operations that involve samples, cultures, or other materials that may contain zoonotic aerosol transmissible pathogens
- Operations who respond to zoonotic aerosol transmissible pathogen incidents
As you can see, except for the last two operations on this list, these facilities and operations do not involve healthcare workers. In this course, our focus will be on the first part of the ATD standard, which applies to healthcare workers.
