Required Actions for Compliance

To ensure effective execution of a program, and to ensure that workers at your healthcare facility are fully protected from respiratory hazards, the Cal/OSHA standards require that your facility take the following actions:

  1. Assign a specific person to be the Program Administrator or Plan Administrator.
  2. Perform a respiratory hazard evaluation of the healthcare facility.
  3. Eliminate or reduce the need for respiratory protection in the workplace (where possible).
  4. Become knowledgeable about respiratory protection and its use.
  5. Develop and implement a written plan that includes policies and procedures for all aspects of the respiratory protection program. (If there is the potential for workers to be exposed to aerosol transmissible diseases, this plan must include a written ATD Exposure Control Plan.) The plan must specifically include:
    1. Identification and medical evaluation of workers who are required to use respirators (there are some exceptions to the medical evaluation section of the ATD standards).
    2. Fit testing procedures for respirators that require fit testing (there are some exceptions to the fit testing requirements in the ATD standards).
  6. Establish a training program.
  7. Conduct an ongoing evaluation of the program.
  8. Maintain records.
