Step 3 - Eliminate or Reduce the Need for Respiratory Protection in the Workplace
The first line of defense against respiratory hazards is to eliminate the hazard in the first place. You may recall that respiratory hazards may be eliminated or reduced by the following methods executed in this order:
- Substituting toxic chemicals or products with less toxic alternatives
- Implementing engineering controls
- Implementing administrative controls
- Changing work practices
In this step of the program, your facility must determine where and how it may be possible to eliminate or reduce the respiratory hazards identified in the initial evaluation and then take the actions necessary to eliminate or reduce any hazards present.
