Respiratory hazards can occur in a variety of industries and jobs. The following are a few examples of industries that may require respiratory protection:

• Construction industry, especially jobs involving confined spaces
• Agriculture industry, including production and services such as pest control
• Mining, such as metal and coal mining, and oil and gas extraction
• Manufacturing, especially industrial machinery, chemical, lumber, and metal fabrication
• Transportation, including railroad, trucking, and warehousing
• Public services such as electric, gas, and sanitation, and especially firefighting
• Wholesale and retail trade, especially automotive dealers and garden suppliers
• Services, such as automotive repair, health services, and engineering services
