Respirator Selection
If a respiratory hazard is present in the workplace, employers must select and provide respirators that are appropriate for the given hazard and its concentration. The employer must provide enough options so that the employee can find a model that is appropriate and fits correctly and comfortably. Respirators must be certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and must be used in compliance with the manufacturer's specifications. Employers must identify the respiratory hazards in the workplace, the estimated amount of employee exposure, and the chemical state and physical form of the hazard. If the employer cannot identify the type, amount, and state of the hazard, the hazard must be considered IDLH.
