Storage & Repairs

If respirators are stored improperly, they may be ineffective while in use, leading to dangerous situations. Respirators must be stored in a way that protects them from damage, contamination, dust, sunlight, extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, and damaging chemicals. Storage must also prevent the facepiece and exhalation valves from being crushed or otherwise deformed.

If a respirator is designated for emergency (rather than routine) use, it must be kept accessible to the work area. Emergency respirators must be stored in a container that clearly labels them as emergency respirators.

If a respirator is in any way defective, it must be removed from service and either discarded or repaired. If a respirator is to be repaired, the repairs must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Repairs must be performed only by someone who has been trained to make such repairs.
  • Repairs may use only the original manufacturer's NIOSH-approved parts designed for the respirator in question.
  • Repairs must follow the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Reducing and admission valves, regulators, and alarms must only be repaired by the manufacturer or a technician trained by the manufacturer.
