Voluntary Respirator Use

Some employees may elect to use a respirator even if hazard exposure levels are not at a point that requires respirator use. Employers must ensure that using a respirator is not a hazard in itself. If employees request to use a respirator other than a filtering facepiece (dust mask), employers must create a partial respiratory protection program that includes at least the following:

  • Anyone using a respirator must have a medical evaluation to determine that it is safe for them to do so.
  • Employers must ensure the proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of the respirator so that it remains safe to use.
