Applying Pesticides

As a handler, your job may require you to apply pesticides both indoors and outdoors. Take responsibility for following the application instructions on the pesticide label and for protecting yourself, others, and the environment.

Before starting to apply pesticides, put on all of the PPE needed - at minimum, wear the PPE listed on the pesticide label. Then carefully examine the application equipment, checking for leaks. If equipment must be fixed, keep your PPE on while doing so.

Never apply pesticides so that they can get on people, either directly or through drift. When you are ready to start the application, check the area where you will be working and ensure that no people, pets, or livestock are nearby. Check the Environmental Hazard Statement on the pesticide label and take care to avoid harming wildlife that may be in or near the area you plan to treat.

If you will be applying pesticides outdoors, check the weather conditions before beginning. Do not apply pesticides when there is a blowing wind that could carry the pesticide out of the treated area or rain that could wash off the treated surface. Look to see if there are any ponds, streams, or wells in or near the area to be treated. Never apply a pesticide such that it could drift or run into water supplies.

When you finish the application, put the equipment away, keeping your PPE on while doing so. Your employer will instruct you on how to clean it.
