Exceptions to PPE Requirements

Employers may allow their pesticide handlers to omit wearing some of the PPE required on the pesticide labeling for certain tasks if the handlers are using a closed system, are in an enclosed cab, or are in a cockpit. These exceptions to PPE are allowed unless they are expressly prohibited by the product labeling. In addition, even when handlers are allowed to wear less PPE during a particular task, pesticide handlers must still be provided with all of the PPE required by the pesticide labeling for that task and have it immediately available in case of an emergency.

Closed systems are systems designed by the manufacturer to contain the pesticide to prevent it from contacting handlers or other people while the pesticide is being handled. Such systems must function properly, and must be used and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's operating instructions. The chart on the following slide explains the various situations in which handlers are allowed to wear less PPE than usual when using closed systems.
