What Are Pesticides?
Pesticides are chemicals that control pests, either by killing the pest, inhibiting its growth, affecting pest reproduction, or acting as a barrier to the pest. Common forms of pesticides include the following:
- Insecticides for controlling insects
- Herbicides for destroying weeds and other unwanted vegetation
- Fungicides for preventing mold and mildew
- Compounds to control other pests, such as mice and rats
Pesticides can sicken people, especially those who work directly with the pesticides. By law, agricultural employers must provide information and the equipment necessary to protect their employees from the harmful effects of pesticides.
