The Cost of Cleanup
One goal of RCRA is to prevent facilities that currently handle hazardous waste from becoming Superfund sites in the future. When owners and operators of such facilities comply with RCRA regulations and prevent hazardous waste contamination, taxpayer dollars are not later needed for the costly cleanup of toxins. Even after a facility has closed, the owners and operators of the site are required to fund the cleanup process. As some of the case studies in this course will demonstrate, the cost of cleanup can be enormous.
