Maintaining the Conditional Exemption
To be eligible for the conditional exemption for transportation and disposal, waste must be either an LLMW that meets the waste-acceptance criteria of a low-level radioactive waste disposal facility or an eligible NARM.
To maintain eligibility for the conditional exemption for transportation and disposal, the exempted waste must meet the following criteria:
- Meet, or be treated so that it meets, land disposal restriction (LDR) treatment standards
- Be accompanied by a proper manifest and be transported according to NRC regulations
- Be placed in one of several permitted types of containers when it is disposed of in the low-level radioactive waste disposal facility
- Be disposed of at a low-level radioactive waste disposal facility that is regulated and licensed by the NRC or an NRC Agreement State
