Storage & Accumulation of Universal Waste

The Universal Waste Rule regulates the storage and accumulation of universal waste. Keep in mind that there may be more stringent requirements imposed by state regulations.

To maintain compliance with the RCRA regulations, all universal waste handlers must meet the following requirements:

  • Designate an accumulation area for each category of universal waste that accumulates at a facility.
  • Place the accumulation area in an out-of-the way area to help prevent damage, breakage, or spillage of the universal wastes.
  • Post a sign or guidance sheet that clearly identifies the accumulation area for each category.
  • Use containers that meet the standards for universal waste.
  • Monitor the accumulation area for damage, breakage, or spillage of the universal waste(s).
