Universal Waste Sites & Containers

Typical universal waste accumulation areas may include custodial closets, basements, utility rooms, fenced outdoor pens, and storage buildings.

To comply with the Universal Waste Rule, universal waste handlers must place universal waste in containers that meet each of a number of requirements, as follows:

  1. Limited to one type of universal waste
  2. Labeled appropriately
  3. Compatible with the type of waste it carries
  4. Dated
  5. Kept closed
  6. Sturdy enough to reasonably prevent releases of toxic material should the contents spill or leak
