Requirements for Used Oil Collection Centers

Used oil collection centers must comply with the RCRA regulations for used oil. The collection centers must do all of the following:

  • Only accept used oils generated by do-it-yourselfers.
  • Limit the volume of each incoming shipment of used oil to 55 gallons.
  • Test the oil to ensure that it has not been mixed with hazardous waste.
  • Document proof that the oil does not contain contaminants.
  • Ensure that the oil is properly stored in containers or tanks.
  • Ensure that the oil is sent to a permitted used oil recycling facility.
  • Ship the oil using transporters that are permitted to haul used oil.
  • Obtain all registration, licensing, permits, and recognition as required by federal, state, county, and municipal government regulations for managing used oil.
