Storing Used Oil at Transfer Facilities

Used oil transfer facilities are areas where oil may be held for more than 24 hours during the normal course of transportation, but no longer than 35 days. Transfer facilities may include loading docks, parking areas, or storage areas.

When a transfer facility stores used oil for more than 35 days, the facility becomes subject to the same regulations that apply to used oil processors and re-refiners (refer to 40 CFR 279, Subpart F).

Transfer facilities must store used oil in containers and tanks that are in good condition and not leaking. The containers that hold the used oil must be stored in a secondary containment system. All containers and above-ground tanks must be labeled with the words "Used Oil."
