Corrosivity Characteristic
A material is considered to be "corrosive" if it meets any of the following criteria:
- It has a pH of 2 or less.
- It has a pH of 12.5 or more.
- It can corrode steel at a rate of more than 6.35 millimeters per year at 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
For example, battery acid has a pH of 1.8, making it acidic enough to be corrosive. Chlorine is another corrosive chemical. It can eat through stainless steel, wood, and other materials.
