Universal Wastes

Universal wastes are hazardous wastes that are generated by so many people in so many different settings that the EPA considers them to be "universal." This category of hazardous wastes includes the following:

Batteries
Pesticides
Mercury-containing equipment
Lamps (such as fluorescent bulbs)

The RCRA regulations pertaining to these wastes are known as the "Universal Waste Rule," which establishes a more relaxed approach to managing these hazardous wastes. The goal of this approach is to encourage people to use recycling and proper disposal methods for these wastes.
