Preparing Hazardous Waste for Transportation

Before a generator of any size can ship its hazardous waste off-site, the generator must package, label, and mark the waste according to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules. The rules for packaging, which are specific to different modes of transportation, materials, and means of packaging, can be found in 49 CFR 178.

In general, packaging must meet the following requirements:

  • Be leak-proof
  • Resist hydrostatic pressure and vibration
  • Not break or tear easily
  • Have some means of relieving pressure
  • Pass inspection, including tests for all of the requirements just listed
