What Is a Manifest?

The manifest is paperwork that tracks and identifies hazardous waste that is being transported from its point of generation to its final destination. The manifest is required whenever hazardous waste is being transported by a generator or by a facility that handles hazardous waste.

Once an EPA ID is obtained, the generator must prepare a manifest. A generator must prepare a manifest when transporting hazardous waste for off-site treatment, storage, or disposal. A facility that specializes in the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste must also prepare a manifest when transporting a rejected hazardous waste load.
