Hazardous Waste Spills in Transit

Transporters are required to take immediate action whenever hazardous waste is spilled or discharged. This action must focus on protecting human health and the environment, and may include efforts to contain the spill.

Should a local, state, or federal government that is acting in its official capacity determine that it is necessary to clean a spill immediately, these agencies may employ transporters who do not have EPA IDs. The agencies may also waive the manifest requirements and permit the transporters to remove the waste without the proper manifests. Cleanup efforts must continue until the hazardous waste discharge no longer presents any hazard to human health or the environment.
