Tank Systems

When a hazardous waste facility uses tank systems that do not have secondary containment features, the facility is required to inspect these systems to confirm that they are not leaking and are fit for use. Whenever a TSDF installs new tank systems or components, the facility is required to send a written assessment to the EPA regional administrator stating that the tank system is suitable for storing and treating hazardous waste. The owner or operator of a new tank system must make sure that the system is handled properly during installation.

Prior to covering, enclosing, or putting a new tank system or a component into use, a qualified installation inspector or licensed professional engineer must inspect the system for the presence of weld breaks, punctures, scrapes of protective coatings, cracks, or corrosion. If any of these problems are present, the TSDF must fix the problems before covering, enclosing, or putting the tank system into use.
