Additional Requirements Regarding Waste Military Munitions

In addition to meeting the conditions established in the RCRA regulations that we just discussed, the owner or operator of a facility that stores waste military munitions must also do the following:

  • Inventory the waste military munitions at least annually.
  • Inspect the waste military munitions at least quarterly.
  • Maintain records of the inventory findings and inspections for at least three years.
  • Limit access to the stored military waste munitions to trained and authorized personnel only.

These requirements apply only to the storage of non-chemical waste military munitions. They do not apply to this waste material during its transportation, treatment, or disposal.

The treatment and disposal of solid waste military munitions are subject to the applicable permitting, procedural, and technical standards in 40 CFR 260 through 270. Unlike the transportation and storage of military munition waste, no exemptions exist for the treatment and disposal of solid waste military munitions.
