Table of Treatment Standards

A table of treatment standards is presented at 40 CFR 268.40. The columns of this table include the following:

  • Column 1: Waste Code - Provides the EPA hazardous waste code. Waste handlers should locate all of the codes applicable to the waste they are treating.
  • Column 2: Waste Description and Treatment and Regulatory Subcategory - Provides a specific description of the waste. Compliance with the appropriate subcategories is important.
  • Column 3: Regulated Hazardous Constituents - Specifies the regulated hazardous constituents that must be treated for each waste code. Listings are shown as both their common names and their Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) numbers.
  • Columns 4 and 5: Wastewaters and Non-wastewaters - Treatment standards are different depending on whether the waste is in a "wastewater" or "non-wastewater" form. When the waste is in a water-based form, the concentration of the hazardous elements must be below the levels given for the specific waste. A second set of levels, in the non-wastewater column, are provided for situations when the waste does not meet the "wastewater" definition.

If both a concentration and a technology are listed as a treatment standard in the table, the handler must comply with both treatment requirements.
