Treatment Alternatives

Certain types of wastes that are disposed of in land disposal units fall under special RCRA regulations. Standards are provided for the following types of waste:

  • Contaminated soil
  • Debris (for example, rocks or old parts of industrial machinery that have been contaminated with hazardous waste)
  • Lab pack wastes (for example, a 55-gallon drum packed with containers that contain small volumes of toxic materials)

These special rules are necessary because the components of the waste (that is, soil, debris, and lab packs) are not, in and of themselves, hazardous waste. Nevertheless, they must be managed as hazardous waste when they contain or are contaminated with hazardous waste.
